September Traditions and Five Essay Topics

Welcome to September! While we tend to think of this month in terms of lesson plans, seating charts, and autumn leaves, September holds a fascinating history that makes for a great quick-hook lesson in language arts or history.

Historical & Cultural Traditions

The Autumn Equinox: Falling around September 22–23, the equinox marks one of two annual moments when day and night are of roughly equal length, signaling equal balance before the days shorten in the Northern Hemisphere.

Harvest Celebrations: Historically, September was defined by agricultural gathering. European traditions centered around bringing in the final grains, a theme that translates naturally into autumn writing topics concerning food cycles and geography.

Modern Labor & Community Days: In North America, September kicks off with Labor Day—celebrating workers' historical contributions and includes Constitution Day on September 17^th. 

Here’s a bit of trivia about September:

Letter Math: September is the only month in the English language whose name has the exact same number of letters as its calendar position (S-E-P-T-E-M-B-E-R = 9 letters).

Birthstone & Flowers: Its traditional birthstone is the deep blue sapphire. 
Its primary birth flowers are the aster and morning glory.

Write about a memorable experience that happened during September. Describe what happened, who was involved, and why you remember it.
2. If I Could Change One Thing About School…
What is one thing you would change about school? Explain what you would change and why you think it would make school better.
3. The First Day of Fall
Imagine you wake up on the first official day of fall. Describe what you see, hear, smell, and do throughout the day.
4. A September Challenge
Write about a challenge students often face at the beginning of a new school year. Explain the challenge and offer one or more solutions.
5. Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall
Compare summer and fall. Which season do you prefer? Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.
