Here’s what teachers are saying about
Simple Steps to Sentence Sense:

This was the best TPT resource I bought all year! Thank you!

“I have used this book for two years and it is amazing to see how well the students learn and enjoy it. My students always tell me how they will never forget how to locate prepositions or direct objects! Each year the students have gotten further in the steps, and they find it less difficult to learn. Out of the two years that I've used this book, I have not had one student to complain when it was time to work on grammar. It actually gives them more confidence and builds their grammar skills. . . .Everyone should use this book to teach grammar!”

You are right...the kids see grammar as "easy stuff" because you break down the analysis so well. Their improved grammar knowledge transforms into their process writing: their revision and editing TAKS scores are markedly improved with this practice.
Even though you are from Texas and know the high stakes testing concerns that we face, the SAM sheet makes the students' writing much clearer and more concise. This is the most sincere complement to your book.

“I have been looking for an effective approach to teaching grammar to my high school English classes. Teaching grammar and teaching grammar effectively are two different things. Having only read through the first few pages of this workbook, I am already excited to bring it into the classroom. For any teachers looking for a good method of teaching sentence structure and grammar - this is what you want! Not only is it a good tool for students, but it also makes me more comfortable teaching the subject. Thanks!”

“Best grammar teaching tool around. Couldn't live without it.”

"I teach in a small, rural school and I've used Simple Steps to Sentence Sense since I found it, some 8 years ago. This resource, combined with 5 minute bell ringers over capitalization, punctuation, etc., is a fantastic way to cover grammar, parts of speech, and sentence structure. (Not everyone finds sentence diagrams a walk in the park.) I ease freshmen into the method and, by the time they come back to me as juniors, we are able to move quickly through the 8 steps - even challenged learners! For 9th grade, I work through the first 3 steps at the beginning of the year and review at the end of the year. For 11th grade, I split the book up into two semesters. My kids look forward to it and even see it as a way to boost their grades. There is nothing better than seeing that moment of comprehension and the wave of relief come over a student's face. I cannot recommend this system enough, especially for those who find classic methods an ineffective drudge. Thanks you very much, Mrs. Tess!"

This is the only book I use to teach parts of a sentence. I love it.

"I'm a teacher in a language school. Anyway, this book is absolutely useful for my class where I've been teaching sentence structure. Even oxford books can't write a book to cover this important English content. Thank you again. I'm sure more and more teachers will know how your book is well written." -- Helen Lace

"I am using this with Deaf students who are ELL. They have already mastered the prepositional phrases since school started! Hope I see lots of progress this year!"

"I love this product! My SPED students struggled to identify subject and predicate at the beginning of the year. When I used your approach of identifying the prepositional phrase first, the light clicked on for my students! Thank you for such a wonderful resource (I love your middle school version, too!)"

I absolutely love your program and the repetitiveness! Well worth the money! I highly recommend it! --Gotta Luv It Creations

“This product is exceptionally well thought out. It provides the teacher with ample explanatory material, ensuring s/he has a solid understanding of what has to be taught. The materials for students are well-paced and they build incrementally; as such they provide a thorough grounding in sentence analysis.

This is a clearly written, well-designed program; if followed conscientiously, it will ensure students learn a great deal, and enjoy the journey towards proficiency in analyzing sentences.”

"Thank you for sharing such a unique way to approach teaching sentences. It makes so much more sense. The only obstacle I have found to using it is that my students do not know their basic parts of speech. They need to know that first. Love your products."

"I'm using this in my adult ESL class...excellent!"

I work at an international school and often have to provide English support to some of our students. This has become a great resource!

"When I saw this, I jumped at it! I have been an English teacher for 30 years and, like all, had my own way and method of presenting. No textbooks needed. Your work is the first one I've seen that parallels the concepts and rigor that I present at a 7th and 8th grade level. I also like your order of presentation! I no longer teach, but I will tutor upon retirement. You just made that so easy for me!! Thanks!"

"I have used this teaching unit for almost a decade now and it is beyond wonderful. If teaching grammar has one major weakness, it is that it is often taught without any sequence and students are always overwhelmed by unrelated rules and concepts. SStSS solves that at least for understanding what's going on inside of a sentence. Every year I have taught this, I watch a wonderful light bulb pop on for the students as they reach step 4. Everything is linked together, and the students GET it."

Hands down, this is the best stuff out there for teaching grammar and usage. I love the idea of finding and eliminating the prepositional phrases first!
